As IMT-2000 3G mobile communications gets rolling, industry plans for 4G

Article Abstract:

Telecommunications providers and manufacturers of communications equipment have started research and development on fourth-generation (4G) mobile communication systems to provide services and terminals by about 2010. Compared with 3G mobile communications with transmission speeds of up to 2Mbps, 4G system features transmission speeds of 50-60 Mbps, which is expected to extend multimedia mobile communications into new uses. The International Telecommunications Union's ITU-Radio Communications sector is working on standards for the 4G system.

Communication networks offer higher capacities, more mobile services

Article Abstract:

Communication networks will undergo more changes in the 21st century. High-speed and large capacity optical networks based on the Internet Protocol will come into full-scale use as the Internet infrastructure evolves. By 2005, terabit networks will replace gigabit networks, which will in turn give way to petabit networks by about 2010. By then, broadband communications will be commonplace through the use of technologies including optical fibers, satellites, digital subscriber lines, fixed wireless access, CATV and mobile communications.

Emerging standards, technologies weave foundation for home networks

Article Abstract:

The emergence of digital home networks in the US is being aided by the development of standards in digital technologies that are now present in ordinary household appliances. The increasing and widespread use of the Internet has also helped immensely towards the creation of the digital home network environment, an idea that was born with the release of multiple-brand remote control systems. However, it is continuing growth of the US economy that is creating the favorable conditions that will make home networks a reality.
