Autosound: Detroit's Race to Pole Position

Article Abstract:

In 1982, two-thirds of new cars were sold with premium sound systems. In 1983, the number rose to three-fourths, and is expected to rise to four-fifths in 1984. More cars are being sold with stereo equipment because equipment is better than in the past, more autosound equipment is now standard, the price can be included in the overall financing, and aftermarket products are not available for all new model cars. Aftermarket dealers believe that better factory standards will increase awareness. The aftermarket business will be $2.5 billion a year. The aftermarket dealers will also benefit from trade resulting from car owners wanting to update equipment as a result of technological advances.
