Batteries: the Achilles' heel of radio communications

Article Abstract:

The importance of radio communications in transmission and distribution line maintenance work has forced utilities to sink significant investments in two-way radio batteries, which can reach $5,000-$6,000/yr for 350 portable radios. One possible way to save on batteries is to maintain a strict battery maintenance procedure, which requires the batteries to be discharged prior to recharging and a regular battery conditioning schedule. The charger being marketed by Advanced Charger Technology fits such requirements, recharging and reconditioning the battery simultaneously.
