CMC moves beyond recording media by offering MP3 players, PDAs

Article Abstract:

CMC Magnetics has expanded beyond the production of recording media, and is developing MP3 players and personal digital assistants. The Taiwanese company will unveil a 128MB MP3 player that can record for two hours and weighs a mere 38 g. CMC is also developing a smaller version of the product and is conducting research on optical disc and semiconductor audio technologies. Besides these products, CMC produces as many as 40 million 3.5-in floppy discs each month in Taiwan alone.

Sharp spreads brand image with portable MD players

Article Abstract:

Sharp Corp accounts for over 30% of the global market for minidisc (MD) audio equipment. Portable MD players have the greatest share in the market, as 80% are made up of both recording and playback systems. The Japanese market is approximately 5.6-6 million units ands 2.07-2.2 million units abroad for 1998. European and US sales are comparatively smaller at 1.3-1.4 million and 440,000-500,000 units projected for 1998 sales.

Digital discs put pro recording power in consumer hands

Article Abstract:

Demand for consumer-use CD recorders in Japan has taken off after the initial concerns by the music recording industry have been allayed. Manufacturers of CD recorders, recordable CDs and rewritable CDs have agreed to a 2% surcharge to wholesale prices of recorders and a 3% surcharge to prices of recording media as royalty payments for duplicating copyrighted material.
