Color TV Poised to Pass 15-Million Mark in '84
Article Abstract:
Production and manufacturing capabilities of color television makers were strained in 1983 because of the unprecedented surge of sales. Growth in 1984 should be healthy but more moderate. Remote control units should account for forty per cent of the market. Premium 1984 televisions will feature square-cornered tubes and data grade displays. Projection television sales will continue to grow. Black and white televisions should maintain a sales volume of between five and six million sets.

More Bang for Buck in Feature-Laden Color TV Lines
Article Abstract:
Dealers will be offering a 1985 line of television sets with more features and lower prices. Average price for color TV sets was $369.63 in 1983. The industry wants to bring up that average by offering feature TVs with lower prices. Despite record sales for the industry, profits have been low. Toshiba's line of FST sets will have their prices lowered this year. Hitachi and Sharp will be introducing new lines with price levels lower than those of 1983.

Color TV Market Share Figure: Where Did All the Mid-Range Go?

All time record sales of color TVs in 1983 were led by low end leader models and high priced high tech models. Sales of thirteen and fourteen inch color TVs increased over sixty-two per cent from the preceding year. Twenty-one inch and larger sets' sales grew 105 per cent. Thirteen and fourteen inch sets are the choice of second set purchasers. More than half of all consoles and a third of all portable sets were sold with remote control.
