Achievements in rotary head magnetic recording

Article Abstract:

Work on magnetic recording began in earnest at the beginning of the 20th century. Rotary head recording was invented by Ampex in 1956. This made it possible to achieve extremely high head to tape velocities and attain very high track densities without the need for large numbers of parallel head/electronics channels. Helican scan designs, also invented by Ampex, appeared in 1960. Major developments in rotary head recording took place in the 1980s. Two of the most important are the introduction and widespread use of metallic particle tape and metal-in-gap heads. Tape thickness has been decreased, leading to longer playing times, total bit capacity, and volume packing densities. This in turn has led to the commercial production of rotary head recording systems which use the most advanced techniques in magnetic recording. The 1990s should see 1000 Megabit per square inch rotary head recorders before the end of the century and they should be in widespread use.

Desktop engineering computers

Article Abstract:

Hardware and software add-ons are making general-purpose desktop computers useful as engineering design tools. Scientific calculators are being replaced at the design-bench by personal computers using math-oriented languages and engineering software. Some personal computers are able to handle CP-M-compatible software which gives them access to a huge number of engineering programs.

How does she do it?

Article Abstract:

Mothers can cope with the demands of work and home by getting their family to pitch in with the chores. A family meeting can be called to explain the need to share the burden chores and how this can be done. The consequences of not performing one's chores should also be agreed upon.
