Sanyo has launched SSP-PD7 equipped with a decoding system, which supports more than one compression scheme. Aiwa, on the other hand, has introduced MM-FX500, a portable audio player that features a MPEG Audio Layer 3 encoder.

Kenwood Corp has introduced the DPC-MP727 portable CD player which is compatible with the Windows Media Audio format. The product has an audio codec capable of reducing the amount of data with a maximum compression ratio of 20:1. Data encoding can be done using Windows Media Player 7. In addition to reproducing sounds from audio CDs, the DPC-MP727 can play back music data created on a personal computer.
