Equipment makers juggle technical and cost concerns

Article Abstract:

Electronics production equipment manufacturers in the printed circuit board (PCB) market struggle with pitch and precision issues at the same time cost issues linger. Customers of PCB equipment demand flexibility in the equipment so they can reconfigure the equipment to serve several different customers with the same production assembly line. Shorter product life cycles, outsource production and global competition are all pushing PCB vendors with more demands. Contract manufacturers account for about 20% of the PCB installed capacity, and even a greater percentage of actual volume production. Besides cost issues, PCB equipment vendors must also struggle with new assembly technologies that enable smaller and lighter PCB production.
