From cooling-water canal to Olympic kayaking course

Article Abstract:

Kayaker Scott Wilkerson convinced Potomac Electric Power Co. (Pepco) to transform the cooling-water discharge canal of the utility's Dickerson, MD, powerplant into an Olympic kayaking course. Pepco placed 17-ton concrete gumdrops for the course, which athletes say is very challenging.

The freeze

Article Abstract:

Electric utilities in Quebec, Canada witnessed the most ferocious ice storm in Jan 1997, which rendered most of their transmission lines devastated. The storm, which drew 1.8 to 3 inches of ice in the region, was so violent that even towers and wood poles were damaged.

Electric utility personnel claim that the Internet's usefulness can be offset by the risks of using electronic mail, the World Wide Web and computer bulletin boards. These include virus attacks, loss of confidentiality and loss of company time.
