The sale of ruggedized computers is increasing along with the sale of mobile computers. Ruggedized computers are built to perform under adverse conditions. S.T. Research Corp's Ultimax 2000 is built to operate under water and in temperatures ranging from -20 degrees to 50 degrees C. RDI Computer Corp's Ruggedized PowerLite mobile computer is designed to operate under a variety of mission situations.

Large data storage problems plague many government and industry organizations. NASA's Earth Science Data and Information System Project and others gather large amounts of data from satellites, which is processed and distributed. Digital data storage systems have been used successfully to capture, store and process such data, such as the AML 2 and the DIR-1000 series recorders.

What you need to know about ruggedized computers

Article Abstract:

Five questions that customers should ask before deciding whether to buy ruggedized or commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) computer equipment are discussed. Ruggedized equipment can operate in relatively extreme temperatures, while COTS equipment cannot. Ruggedized equipment can withstand strong shocks, such as those that might result from a computer being dropped on concrete.
