The deregulation of the electric power industry has forced electric utilities to revamp their research and development policies. However, they are still committed to the use and exploitation of research and development programs to achieve improved competitiveness in a deregulated market.

Competitive edge in the electricity market requires accurate analysis of capacity predictions. The majority of electric power executives use three sources of capacity forecasting: statistics and data bases, econometric forecasting models, and practical knowledge.

PacifiCorp, an electric utility, uses an electronic image processor to store documents digitally. It formed a task force to investigate cost efficiency and productivity enhancement. The system it selected saves money by eliminating time looking for documents.
