Multivariate cointegration analysis and the long-run validity of PPP

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the long-term validity of purchasing power parity (PPP) is presented. The analysis evaluates the validity of the PPP by applying multivariate cointegration methodology on exchange rates and foreign exchange market price levels. It is shown that the PPP held for European Pound, Lira, Norwegian Krone, Schilling, Escudo and Peseta. The tests invalidated PPP for the US and Canadian Dollar, the Belgian Franc and the Danish Krone.
