Malaysian base outputs most Sharp VCRs, hastens progress

Sharp Electronics Malaysia (SEM) produces about 90% of the VCR units sold the under Sharp brand. It started manufacturing VCRs in 1992, reaching the 1 million mark by yearend, which had gone beyond the 15th millionth mark by Dec 1996. For 1998, it expects to produce 2.7 million units, 8% higher than in 1997. SEM ships 50% of its products to North America, 20% to the Middle East and 30% to Asia. In the future, SEM plans to produce more parts in-house and cut lead times between order receipt and product shipment.
