Portable audio of all kinds attracts Japanese users

Article Abstract:

Japan's portable audio market is projected to be bouyant in 2000. The portable MiniDisc (MD) players, including MD radiocassettes, have a strong replacement demand while CD radiocassette systems are in favor. The market for portable MD equipment is expanding with shipments of radiocassette systems in Japan totaling 224,000 units in Jan and Feb 2000. Producers are sustaining consumer interest in conventional heaphone stereos, pportable radios, portable CD players and portable tape recorders by adding value to their designs and performance.

Japan's portable audio equipment market continue to expand, fueled by the increase in the number of young buyers. Among the most sought after audio products are portable MiniDisc players, radiocassette recorders and lighter and more functional tape recorders. The leading companies releasing audio products are Matsushita Electric Industrial Company Ltd, Sony Corp, Victor Company of Japan Ltd, Sharp Corp and Aiwa Company Ltd.

In Japan, lightweight MD players help buoy portable audio market

Sales of portable audio equipment in Japan remain strong, with analysts predicting 5% percent growth of the sector in 2000. Favorable prospects for the portable audio market are fueled by strong demand for compact disc (CD) radiocassette players, portable MD players and semiconductor audio players. Conventional headphone stereos, portable CD players, tape recorders and radios are also experiencing renewed demand.
