Samsung resumes investments in chip facilities

Article Abstract:

Samsung Electronics is investing $1 billion to expand its production of semiconductors, particularly 256M-bit DRAMs. Part of the money would be used in increasing the production of 8-inch wafers at its facility in Austin, TX, to 30,000 wafers per month. The wafers would be used for 128- and 256M-bit DRAM chips. Samsung adds that 64M-bit DRAMs would still be the industry mainstay but would gradually be phased out after 1999. The company is also committing as much as 30% of its 64M-bit DRAM production to Rambus DRAMs, which the company believes has great potential in 1991 and onwards.
