Software from Matsushita, Intel protects copyrights

Article Abstract:

Matsushita Electric Corporation of America and Intel Corp have jointly developed software for protecting copyrights of music distributed through the Internet. The software complies with the Secure Digital Music Initiative and is designed to prevent music piracy at each stage of the distribution process. It incorporates the Secure Music Transfer Agent software that makes it impossible to make copies of music being transferred from a portable music player with a Secure Digital memory card.

Two big names team up to tackle digital A/V, computer technologies

Article Abstract:

Japanese manufacturer Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd and US software developer Microsoft Corp have formed an alliance to jointly develop digital television techniques for upcoming personal computers. The alliance will combine Matsushita's technology and expertise in audio- visual products with Microsoft's technology and expertise in computer software. The companies will also collaborate in the development of advanced set-top boxes for public networks and retail customers.

IBM acquires greatest number of patents in 1999

Article Abstract:

International Business Machines Corp (IBM) received the most number of US patents in 1999 with 2,789. The Patent Intelligence and Technology report, compiled by patent service firm IFI Claim, also revealed the presence of six Japanese companies in the top 10 list of patent recepients for the year. IBM was also joined in the top 10 list by two other US firms, Motorola and Lucent Technologies, and by Samsung of South Korea.
