Sony lays out plans to capture 30% of market for DVD players

Article Abstract:

Sony Corp has made new capital investments at its manufacturing plant in Malaysia as it prepares to capture 30% of the global market for DVD players. The company expects worldwide demand for DVD players to reach 17 million units in FY 2000, with the US and Europe as the biggest markets, with 4 million units each. Sony has introduced new models with added features to cope with the falling prices of DVDs, which are already being sold for as low as $199. These new models have features such as 200-disc changers.

Pioneer's PDV-LC20TV, PDV-20 portable DVD video players

Article Abstract:

Pioneer Electronic Corp has introduced the PDV-LC20TV portable DVD player with a 7-in wide-screen LCD and a TV tuner. The PDV-LC20TV weighs 630 g and sells for 120,000 yen or $1,111. Pioneer has also unveiled the PDV-20 portable DVD player that can play both DVDs and rewritable DVDs. The PDV- 20 can also be connected to the Eye-Trek face-mounted display. Both models can operate on batteries, AC power and with a car-connection kit.
