Sony magnifies lineup with large-capacity, reliable storage discs

Article Abstract:

Sony Corp of Japan has launched its latest lines of industrial-use, largest-capacity data storing media. Among its products are 3.5-inch floppy discs and 8mm data cartridges which are compatible with Advanced Intelligent Tape standard; 8x-speed, 3.5- and 5.25-inch magneto-optical (MO) discs which are used as server-use media and recordable CDs. The company has released 1.3 GigaMO discs and will introduce DVD+RWs and formatted rewritable CDs. Sony's Recording Media division has posted sales of 220 billion yen in 1998, with data media account for 30% of the sales.

Pioneer raises DVD ante with DVD recorder, DVD-RW discs

Article Abstract:

Pioneer/Technologies Group Inc has unveiled its DVR-1000 DVD recorder and DVS-RW47 DVD-RW disc. The company has combined its own DVD-RW technology with the Video Recording Format established by the DVD Forum in making the DVR 1000. Pioneer's DVR-1000 is capable of recording as much as two hours of movies on a blank DVD-RW disc at the standard mode. This can be extended to as much as six hours using the manual recording mode.

As CD prices fall, Sony offers 1.3GB CD, plans to offer 22.5GB DVD

Article Abstract:

Sony Corp is looking to expand its optical media business. With the rapid shift of data from analog to digital formats, demand for optical media that permit random access has been increasing. In Jul 2000, the company launched a CD-format disc featuring especially high density and high capacity. Sony is also developing a high-capacity media that employs blue laser technology. A single disc will be able to contain 22.5GB.
