Canon Inc is incorporating its proprietary optical technologies into its own line of digital camcorders, which were launched in October 1997 to supplement the company's range of high-end analog camcorders. The company's XI-1, MV-1/Optura and CV11 digital camcorders are supported by a marketing initiative that concentrates on the US market, where the company accounts for a 20% share for digital camcorders. Canon's XL-1 deluxe camcorder, introduced in January 1998, is used by broadcast stations as ancillary equipment and features three-CCD design.

The NightShot function that the company has developed for its camcorders is based on human vision research and the innate attributes of charge-coupled devices.
