Three technologies open path for cheap, high-capacity DVD-RAM

Article Abstract:

The land-groove recording system, the mark-edge recording system and the combination of a 650 nm wavelength laser with a thin substrate are responsible for the DVD-RAM's large storage capacity. The land-groove technology records signals on the ridges and can be used in raising track density to form substrates and tracking servos. On the other hand, the mark-edge recording system provides corresponding signals at both ends of the recording mark, which increases line density. The recording and reproduction of extremely-small recording marks are realized by using a short-wavelength laser and a thin substrate.

System LSIs open new prospects for testers

Article Abstract:

The Japan Electric Measuring Instruments Manufacturers' Assn projects demand for logic IC and system LSI testers to grow 18 annually in Japan as the semiconductor industry shifts from memory devices to system LSIs. Growth prospects are described to be solid since semiconductor makers are intensifying efforts for system LSIs. Chip makers, especially those in the US, are also reinforcing activities for advanced microprocessor units.
