Video: Beyond the Betamax Victory: Where Do We Go from Here?

Article Abstract:

The Supreme Court's decision that home video taping does not violate copyright laws dealt a fatal blow to Hollywood's bid to participate in video industry profits. The manufacture and sale of Betamax recorders were ruled to be exempt from copyright infringements. The decision dealt with time shifting rather than library building. Jack Valenti is leading Hollywood's efforts to gain ground in Congress and in the Senate for the copyright legislation.

Programmers Poised to Release New Software Title - For Sale

The prerecorded video industry is expected to explode in 1984. The successes of 'Flashdance' and 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' have demonstrated that consumers are ready for prerecorded videotapes at the right price. Viewing privately owned videotape may be the preferred manner of movie watching in the near future.

Continuing Saga of Sales vs Rentals: Lower Prices Helping Sales Close Gap

Article Abstract:

Prerecorded video sales are growing as a result of lower prices. Videocassette rentals are also growing along with the VCR population. Video specialists say that prerecorded videocassette sales will eventually equal rentals. The prerecorded tape industry is still dominated by rentals.
