A fresh look at reaction engineering

Article Abstract:

A practical overview of reactor design and engineering is presented. A typical chemical-process operations involves the basic sequence of a reaction step followed by a separation step. The reactor brings the feeds and catalyst into contact to allow one or more reactions to proceeed. Thus, the reactor design should maximize the conversion of feeds to the target products while minimizing the side products. Several factors that should be considered in reactor designs are thermodynamics, kinetics, properties of the feeds and production requirements.

Evaluate the options for measuring process levels

Article Abstract:

Differential-pressure transmitters and bubblers, floats and displacement devices are the mechanical methods for accurate level measurement. However, mechanical devices require scheduled and unscheduled maintenance to maintain their accuracy, repetability and reliability. On the other hand, electronic level devices are less maintenance-intensive due to the absence of moving parts. Magnetostrictive level instruments, RF capacitance, ultrasonic and radar technologies are the most popular means of measuring levels electronically.

Facing the challenge of mixing problem fluids

Article Abstract:

The successful mixing of problem fluids depends on choosing the correct impeller. The selection task not only involves choosing the proper type but also the most appropriate number of impellers, their diameters and their locations. The mixer should be designed as simple but as versatile as possible. On the other hand, there are situations when the only possible way of dealing with problem fluids is to provide increased mixing intensity and equipment flexibility.
