A fundamental view of molecular interactions

Article Abstract:

A fundamental view of molecular interactions is discussed based on a project using scanning tunneling microscopy to record vibrational spectra of single molecules isolated on surfaces with the goal of correlating structure of structure-bound molecules to local environment. The correlations are interesting from the points of view of surface chemistry and catalysis. Heat has been found not to be the sole catalyst driving simple chemical reactions, with catalysis by the internal energies of molecular vibrations a factor. The researcher, whose student career is discussed, is S. Alex Kandel, a recent recipient of the Nobel Laureate Signature Award.

Let there be light

Article Abstract:

The invention of Isaac B. Horton III, CEO, founder and chair of Remote Source Lighting International Inc. and a group of world-renowned scientists is the Light Pump, a pump in a little metal box that feeds light into a fiber-optic cable that takes illumination to the needed spot. No electricity leaves the pump, which is the innovation. No electricity is at the light source. IR and UV can be transmitted with it. The device, on the development of which the company spent $28 mil+, has a life of about 20 years, making light-bulb-changing obsolete. The story of the company and of the founder are covered.

A patent miner's story

Article Abstract:

Searching patent databases online enables researchers to have access to whole libraries of patents, research disclosures, foreign/domestic patent applications with translations, and to do many other things they could not do easily a few years ago. The emergence of gene-based technology will bring more interest to such databases and questions about genes and patents. URLs are listed.
