Adhesives catch up welding

Article Abstract:

More money is spent on materials and accessories for adhesive bonding than welding. The technology is still regarded with some suspicion and many frequently turn to traditional fastenings. The Welding Institute (TWI has now merged with the Centre for Adhesive Technology (CAT) to give high quality information on technology issues and applications. Many engineers are only aware of off the shelf epoxies such as acrylics, anaerobics and cyanoacrylates but there are many specialist adhesives that can solve specific engineering problems.

Energised tool stirs up welding

Article Abstract:

The Welding Institute has developed a technology for welding plate and sheet metal. Friction stir welding allows joining materials previously unsuited to welding. Two end faces are held together and joined by the action of a spinning or reciprocating tool. The technique has proved suitable for aluminium, copper and PVC. It may also be appropriate for lead, zinc and magnesium alloys.

Rolling electrode speeds welding

Article Abstract:

TWI's new Moving Contact Arc Welding (MCAW) technology is based on the positioning of a specially designed, flux-covered consumable along the weld line. An electrode is then drawn over it. This can be used for a wide range of arc welding applications, particularly in cases where joints are complex or access limited. The process is suitable for use even by untrained workers.
