An Investigation of the Utility of Flowcharts During Computer Program Debugging

Article Abstract:

The concepts of flowchart usage as an aid in program debugging has been widely debated. An experiment has been conducted to compare flowcharts, program listings and Bowles structure diagrams as debugging aids. Each of three groups were to find the one error in each of six programs. In every case, the error could be located by the behavior of the program. No significant differences were found among the three approaches. The nature of the task and the characteristics of the individual programmer seem to be important determinants for the usefulness of flowcharting.

A Program for Management

Article Abstract:

Fourth generation languages and decision support systems have evolved as a result of non-data processing personnel who need to write computer programs. The software supplies all translations and instructions. Fourth generation languages are procedural computer languages. Decision support systems are integrated and form a complete system of data storage, retrieval, manipulation, data collection, calculation, processing, report writing, and graphic displays.
