An engineer in all but name

Article Abstract:

The UK public tends to use the word engineer to describe anyone who works with engines or machinery of some kind. The Engineering Council is seeking to raise public awareness of what an true engineer is, while at the same time, improving the social status of engineers. Continental engineers are part of a well respected profession. The Engineering Council would like to see more engineers enroll on the engineering register, although the sheer diversity of the profession may make it hard to decide what the definition of an engineer actually is.

Moulding on for the future

Article Abstract:

Dr Robin Kent led a conference for designers to improve their understanding of working with plastics. Dr Kent suggested that there will probably not be any new types of polymers developed in the next 30 years but present ones will be improved. Alloying plastics and additives will be more important, with wood and cellulose used as reinforcements and fillers. Wood pulp filler reduces resin costs and improves the quality of the plastic. Other similar fillers should be identified.
