At the crossroads of computing and quality

Article Abstract:

Quality professionals can better gage the importance of information technology for quality management practices by examining the effect of computing on quality management rather than on how quality management has affected computing. IBM claims that there are five technological drivers which affect quality management practices. These are data analysis, telecommunications, process reengineering with computers, culture and values of information technology and quality management, and knowledge management.

Six sigma and the future of the quality profession

Article Abstract:

A quality control initiative was successfully implemented at Scott Paper Co., resulting in improved business processes and products. One significant benefit is that the company's departments now assume greater role in quality control. The quality department merely provides methods for integrating the departments' quality initiatives. A similar program was implemented at General Electric, called the six sigma initiative, and was found to be as effective as Scott's program.
