Relay controlled units are cheaper and quicker to install, yet the systems have only been utilized for large commercial projects in the United Kingdom, whilst in Europe it has been widely used since the 1950s.

There are two main categories of light sources: discharge and incandescent; but within these types there are many individual choices. A brief overview of lamps available for interior use is presented, including tungsten filament lamps, fluorescent lamps, high pressure sodium and metal halide.
