Jini to the rescue

Article Abstract:

Jini, a connection technology introduced by Sun Microsystems in 1999, provides an efficient way to combine diverse electronic capabilities and systems into a functioning network. Jini is built around a Lookup Service that resides on a network-attached server. This arrangement makes Jini services available to users with client application programs. The Jini Community, an open, collaborative effort, involves many of the industry's leading companies, including 3com, Canon, Epson, Kodak, Motorola, Nokia, Novell, Quantum, Seagate, Sharp, Siemens, Sony and Xerox.

MPEG-4: Multimedia for our time

Article Abstract:

The newest multimedia standard, MPEG-4, released in 2/99, is audiovisually very effective and invites viewers to join what is happening on the screen. The standard was developed in a five-year period by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)(Geneva). Interactivity will be such that the user can interact with objects inside the scene, either from real sources or synthetic ones. The standard is defensive and gives tools to create uniform top-quality Internet video and audio decoders and encoders before an unmanageable tangled situation develops.

Bringing order to the embedded space

Article Abstract:

Lack of standards for embedded software sets up inefficiency in the design process. Embedded systems development costs money for the development of software, a very device-dependent activity. A panel of experts has discussed this problem with focus on whether connectivity standards for major environments can be set up, which of the environments will be successful with embedded development and what the best number of environments might be.
