Cable-readying the golden dome

Article Abstract:

Ellerbe Becket Inc of Minneapolis, MN, was able to accomplish the installation of a cable infranstructure at the University of Notre Dame's Main Administrative Building. The engineering consulting firm spent nearly a decade in the reconstruction and renovation of the 19th-century building. The 'modern Gothic' building, with the trademark golden dome, now boasts of 3,700 ft of fiber-optic cable, over 2,100 network outlets, over 425 telephone outlets and 327,803 ft of CATS communication cable.

Mechanical engineers utilize varying methods, equipment and designs for airconditioning building, with indoor air quality considered as the most important issue. Other trends in air conditioning include simplified maintenance and the use of direct-digital controls. However, engineers are also utilizing long-established techniques such as heat recovery equipment such as heat pumps and enthalpy wheels.

A whole new package

Article Abstract:

Engineers must keep pace with the latest developments in packaged air- conditioning systems in light of prohibitions on refrigerants. Packaged heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment manufacturers are giving more attention on redesigning equipment to accommodate R-22 replacement refrigerant R-410A, according to Piotr Domanski, leader of the Thermal Machinery Group of the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
