Filter presses take the heat

Article Abstract:

Manufacturers of filter presses have introduced their latest lines. The added features such automation and continuous operation have increased the demand for the product particularly for dewatering and clarifying chemicals, pigments, pharmaceuticals, foodstuffs and minerals. Among the new products are Filtra Systems's Verti-Press EF automatic power press, US Filter's J-Vap Systems and Larox Corp's Powerex PF automated pressure filters.

Mixing powders into liquids

Article Abstract:

The processing of powders into liquids is not a simple task since powders do not hydrate easily and form lumps if they are added too fast or too slow. Doug Cohen, VP for technical services at Charles Ross & Son, says one of the most challenging functions in mixing is wetting out powders. For instance, remedial steps are undertaken to prevent lumps created when powders come into contact with liquids in batch mixers. On the other hand, inline mixers are better than batch mixers since they are designed to prevent lumps but require a metering system.

Filling systems let powders down gently

Article Abstract:

The development of dust-containment capabilities is essential in industries where blended powders result in airborne dust that puts workers at risk for exposure to contaminants. Jenike and Johanson Inc's ProModus Div has developed the Pharmasok filling system which features a flexible plastic tube that extends to the bottom of the bin. This enables the powder to spill down slowly into the bin. Another manufacturer of powder- handling systems is Zanchetta and Csrl Romaco Group. Its Air Chamber system is designed to prevent the demixing of product as it is discharged from a blender on one level to a bin on the floor below.
