Calibration ensures accuracy

Article Abstract:

It is a good practice to calibrate electronic equipment regularly, but unfortunately, many engineers and technicians do not do so. Periodic calibration should be done for all instruments, whether they are standalone or part of a computer-controlled system.

Network test starts in the lab

Article Abstract:

Component parts of a multi-gigabit-speed fiber-optic network need to be tested before such a network is deployed.Unfortunately, according to Williams Communications Group Inc Chief Technologist Chris Hamilton, no equipment exists for testing line side characteristics or to test 10GB/s devices. Consequently, Williams Communications, which builds its own network to lease and sell fiber capacity, performs its own examination and lab tests on any component it intends to install.

Learning from hackers: the open-source movement can teach project managers a lot

Article Abstract:

Linux and the open-source software movement that created it are continuing to gain acceptance, and project managers can learn much from open-source practicioners, or hackers, as Eric Raymond's 1997 publication 'The Cathedral and the Bazaar' calls them. The word 'hacker,' used in this sense, is a complementary term that means someone who solves problems and builds things. According to Raymond, hackers exhibit five attitudes: the world is full of fascinating problems to be solved; nobody should have to solve a problem twice; boredom and drudgery are evil; freedom is good; and competence trumps attitude.
