Build your quality system

Article Abstract:

The ISO 9000 requirements document can overwhelm companies planning to apply for certification and its 'Element 4.2: Quality System' section can be one of the hardest elements of the groundwork for ISO 9000 certification. This is why there is a substantial amount of literature available for the accomplishment of this portion of the certification process. The ISO standard does not outline a precise method for structuring quality documents so most firms find it easier to envision the different levels of quality-system documents required by certification as layers in a pyramid.

Cal lab accreditation slowly takes hold

Article Abstract:

Accreditation of calibration laboratories is expected to become the norm with the creation of the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) and the American Assn for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA). A2LA is a membership organization based in Frederick, MD, while NVLAP is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Both laboratory accreditation organizations offer quick competent assessment and accreditation services to calibration laboratories, although the concept has yet to find wide acceptance in the industry due to cost issues.

The next step: adapting ISO 9000 to specific industry needs

Article Abstract:

The targeted revision of the ISO 9000 in 1999 should consider the varied characteristics of specific industries if the standard is to gain global acceptance. Because of the current standards' alleged failure to meet the unique needs of the different types of industries, some manufacturers worldwide have either resorted to an abstract of the ISO 9000 complemented with industry-specific requirements or to industry-specific guidelines for compliance with the ISO 9000.
