Burden of provision lands at planning's door

Article Abstract:

Stratford-on-Avon District Council believes that the UK government's guidelines on providing affordable housing are unjust and could affect the district's ability to provide quality housing at a reasonable price. The government's draft Circular 13/96, published in Aug. 1996, suggests that only sites of 25 dwellings or above, or 1 hectare or more, should be targeted for a percentage of social housing. Stratford planners say that sites of this size are not often found in the district. They want every new development to include a proportion of social housing.

Housing clash

Article Abstract:

Robert Jones, UK planning minister, has estimated demand for housing in the West Midlands region of England at 310,000 new homes due to increased levels of divorce and other social changes. This is a higher figure than 285,000 previously estimated. Brimingham City Council argues that the city's planners have taken social change into account and have come up with a lower figure. Planners are concerned that developers may move away from urban renewal if control of building on green field sites is relaxed.

Surrey warns of green belt sacrifice to meet household projections

Article Abstract:

It will be necessary to make a considerable reduction in the green belt area in the county of Surrey if the extra 81,600 homes planned for the county in the period to 2016 are to be built, according to Surrey County Council's planning committee. At present, the green belt accounts for 73% of the county's area. The county council feels that emphasis should be placed on improving London, England, with every effort being made to protect the green belt.
