Computer-aided design (CAD) and Internet technologies have made a big impact on the consulting engineering firms and the way they conduct their businesses. A survey of the big firms in the industry reveals such changes as improved product presentation, greater detail and efficiency due to the ease in making changes associated with the application. On the other hand, some firms contend that the addition of the necessary hardware to meet the demand of today's clients has also resulted in higher operating costs.

Computer fire modelling sees expanded use in building high-performance fire designs. The computer models, which are used by designers to evaluate alternate designs, are presently employed as a design tool for the structural, electrical, ventilation and plumbing disciplines. The prescriptive fire protection and life-safety requirements relate to means of egress, fire separations, suppression and fire alarm systems. Designers may comply with the prescriptive requirements or applying for a code equivalency.
