CAD smooths vibration and heat distortion

Article Abstract:

Plastics components can be made more efficient if the designer is able to analyze how changes will affect the finished product. While full element analysis of the problem is costly and requires mainframe-based techniques, new developments have shown that it is worthwhile. One example is the redesign of a car inlet manifold made by Germany's Montaplast. A vibration problem was analysed using a Cray C90 computer and appropriate software. The resultant redesign was able to achieve an improvement in the component's performance.

Materials are the key to durability

Article Abstract:

A coating of diamond-like carbon (DLC) increases the lifespan of bearing components in compressors, motors and pumps by between five to tenfold. DLC has the toughness of diamond but also has the low friction associated with graphite. Wood bearings are useful when machinery is to be used in a dirty environment. A bearing made of rock maple is soaked with petrolatum wax and the bearing compresses when it encounters a pollutant. Oily wax covers the object and it is absorbed into the bearing.
