Call for U.S. tech plan faults corporate R&D

Article Abstract:

The National Academy of Engineering is calling for the formulation of a national technology strategy, whose objective will be to push economic development. Four objectives are proposed by the academy for the US to remedy its weaknesses in the field of technology. These are the adoption and implementation of commercially valuable technology, an increase in research anddevelopment investments among the private sector, access to and utilization of foreign technology and high-tech markets as well as the link-up of federal technology policy to local and foreign economic policy.

R&D at 3M: continuing to play a big role

Article Abstract:

Corporate culture can be influenced and modified by a research and development (R&D) executive by exerting leadership and developing credibility. The case of 3M, which has a long-standing tradition of innovation and where R&D fuels corporate growth, is cited. R&D executives are encouraged to develop a formula for success for the company, build consensus toward a common objective, direct R&D efforts toward achieving specific results and pave the way for the execution of ideas that may spur new businesses.

The changing agenda for research management

Recent international trends and the rise of the information industry has spurred the need for research managers to confront planning challenges and reassess several old assumptions on the process of industrial research. Of specific concern are the generic lessons learned by the industrial research industry from 1970 to 1990 in integrating the research function with strategic planning.
