R&D spending update

Article Abstract:

Data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis reveals that foreign firms' US affiliates incurred bigger research and development (R&D) expenditures in 1989 than US firms did on their overseas R&D during the same period. Foreign companies were found to have spent $9.2 billion on R&D for the year, compared with the $5.4 billion spent by US companies on overseas R&D during the same year.Real R&D spending by US industrial firms are seen to outpace the inflation rate, according to management consulting firm Schonfeld Associates.

Foreign-owned companies continue to increase their spending on R&D in the United States

Article Abstract:

The research and development (R&D) spending of foreign-owned companies in the US during 1995 increased by 13.5% to $17.6 billion from $15.5 billion in 1994. Foreign-owned firms' R&D expenditures represent 18% of the total corporate-financed R&D activities in the country. The growth is attributed to the rise in foreign-based multinational companies' acquisition of US corporations.
