Lighting spaces; CAD makes designing for the outdoors easier

Article Abstract:

The design of lighting for outdoor spaces is complex and involves many factors. Computer Aided Design (CAD) can save time and labour in this process. The CAD system not only produces plans and grids of the design but can quickly incorporate changes and assess alternative designs. CAD was first used in the early 1980s and systems have been improved and refined ever since. Photometric data is available from manufacturers in electronic format for use in databases and designing. CAD will have a continuing role to play in lighting design but its efficiency will depend on the lighting designer's skill as well as the features of the software.

A three-dimensional vision for cad's future

Article Abstract:

The design and construction of the electrical installation for the Civil Aviation Authority's Southampton, England, en-route air traffic control center is being accomplished using a 3D computer-aided design (CAD) system. The reasons for using a 3D CAD system include keeping the project on schedule and eliminating certain risks in construction. Autocad Release 12 with MAP CADuct and Hevacomp's Building Services Library were the selected software packages.

Time for the construction industry to catch up

Article Abstract:

The use of computer aided design (CAD) in contracting is still mainly restricted to financial management rather than construction itself. A particular CAD system must be suited to the type of project undertaken, and considerations include the amount of disk space required to produce drawings. The use of 3D CAD is also discussed.
