Can Category 5 cable handle IT?: will high speed local area networks really work over ordinary Category 5 cabling systems, or is an enhanced network required to give a reliable performance?

Article Abstract:

There is confusion in the IT industry as to whether high speed local area networks will work over ordinary Category 5 cable systems, with some suppliers advocating enhanced cable or Category 6 cable networks. Some protocols will be unable to provide a reliable performance over a Category 5 system and a solution is to use a premium brand Category 5 system that exceeds minimum standards. This will mean lower attenuation, improved cable balance and cross talk and tighter characteristic impedance. The relevant standards are summarised and specifications given.

The copper bottomed power solution: power cabling and distribution is still seen as money wasted rather than well spent by many clients. Electrical contractors brought in when refurbishment of buildings is required should be promoting the need for a properly designed system says a new report

Article Abstract:

The electrical installation in buildings often falls into the least possible price category, although end users could actually save by spending more on their electrical system in the beginning. A report by the Copper Development Association (CDA) found that up to 150,000 non-residential sites have power quality problems, with more than 90% of problems originating from the customer as opposed to the host utility. Problems include flickering lights, pc crashes and failure of IT installations.

Data cabling - it all adds up: data installation has been hijacked by IT specialists, but the time is right for electrical installers to make the move into structured data cabling systems

Article Abstract:

Electrical contractors are in an indeal position to win data cabling business due to early contact with building developers. This would ensure less disruption, a faster job and even cost savings for the customer. A structured cabling system should be able to cope with any additional users in the future, with floor boxes containing several sockets for data, voice, fax and modem lines.
