The British contestant Electrician Gavin Battersby only managed tenth place in the Commercial Wiring event which was part of the 35th World Skills Competition in Montreal, Canada. He achieved 504 points and was awarded a Diploma of Excellence. His failure to win a medal was blamed on his slow start. The World Skills Competition involved 600 participants competing in 41 different trades, such as bricklaying and confectionary. Some 34 countries took part in 1999, with the UK coming 10th in the medal table. The next Olympics will be held in 2001 in Seoul, South Korea.
