Ceramic counteracts materials shrinkage and expansion

Article Abstract:

Researchers at Lucent Technologies Inc and Johns Hopkins University have discovered why zirconium tungstate, unlike most materials, expand when cooled and shrink when heated. The ability of the compound to counteract unwanted shrinkage or expansion effects makes it a viable material for forming composite-based components used in fiber optic technology. Lucent is evaluating the potential of using a zirconium tungstate compostie material for packaging a grating used in glass fiber optic.
