Ceramic thin films: poised for new uses

Article Abstract:

New developments in ceramic thin films may have direct applications for the mainstream chemical process industries. One of them is a proprietary vacuum deposition process developed by Vitex Systems, for fabricating thin-film barrier structures on flexible or rigid substrates, including plastics, that are as thin as 10 microns. Research is also being done on materials that self-assemble into a twisting double gyroid. These materials have ordered pores or struts that can be used as selective membranes, next-generation catalysts and photonic materials.

Oxygen separation sparks new ceramic membranes

Article Abstract:

The search for cost-effective means of providing oxygen for gas processing initiatives is resulting in increased interest in ceramic membranes. While the materials are noted for their brittleness and difficulty in fabrication, they are also favored for their unique chemical and physical properties that are deemed to be superior to other polymeric membranes. Ceramic membranes are utilized in high-temperature environments and in cases when mechanical stability is required.

New grads see job upturn

Article Abstract:

Employment prospects are bright for graduating chemical enginers in 1998, who are having a considerably easier time finding positions compared to their counterparts in 1997. A survey found that nearly two-thirds or 66% of chemical engineering graduates seeking employment have already accepted job offers in 1998, compared to 48% in 1997. Women chemical engineering graduates who constituted 44% of the survey respondents fared better than their male counterparts.
