Searching for new scents

Article Abstract:

Fragrance chemicals manufacturers are conducting innovative research to develop new aroma chemicals. International Flavors and Fragrances conducted research aboard the space shuttle Discovery to determine the influence of microgravity on a plant's aroma. Giovaudan Roure has launched its GreenSky Technology program to search for new aromas in the rainforest canopy, while Quest International has conducted a research to capture the odor of a meteorite.

Controlling fast reaction

Article Abstract:

Optimal chemical reactor designs are necessary to avoid waste, maximize product yield and improve operational efficiency for chemical processes. These designs can be established by creating new applications for commercial mixer-reactors and improving continuous-flow reactors in lieu of batch processes. Control over and the prevention of fast chemical reactions are also necessary to minimize undesirable byproducts.

Vacuum pumps fill a void

Article Abstract:

Chemical process firms are increasing their use of dry vacuum pumps to avoid the effluents resulting from the use of other vacuum pumps. The majority of pump types use working fluids that are mixed with evacuated vapors which result in the generation of contaminated liquids. Dry vacuum pumps do not require working fluids and liquid-ring vacuum systems recirculate sealants, thereby preventing or reducing wastes.
