Tracking weather's flight path

Article Abstract:

New technology is enabling pilots to more accurately predict and avoid bad weather.. Many planes encounter severe turbulence that goes unreported because there are no injuries; in other cases turbulence has been known to cause injury and even death. The most promising technology for detecting turbulence is a new Doppler laser radar (lidar) system.. It demands extremely sensitive equipment that must be affordable enough for the airline industry to adopt; Coherent Technologies has been developing much of the core technology.. An aircraft vortex spacing system is a new type of automated system for predicting wake vortices, or turbulence generated behind an aircraft. Information available to a commercial pilot about hazards such as thunderstorms may be scanty and inaccurate. Several research projects are underway to improve forecasts of storms and let pilots develop flight paths around them. High-speed data link communications need to be adapted to the unique requirements of aviation.

Marches with penguins: Roger Hill

Article Abstract:

Roger Hill and his employees at Wildlife Computers create devices that are attached to animals to track their location, depth, and biological functions. Hill spends his day writing software or designing circuit boards but also dabbles in a variety of functions at the office such as solving problems in the design of new marine devices.
