Plug and play

Article Abstract:

Building automation, which has been the collective goal of the engineering community for decades, is leaning towards the adoption of open protocols. Most experts agree that there are two open/standard protocols that have the potential to offer 'plug and play' products that can readily be integrated into existing data networks. These protocols include BACnet, an ANSI standard, and LonWorks, an open technology.

Building a better chiller plant

Article Abstract:

The leading mechanical engineers in the US anticipate an increase in the utilization of hybrid chiller plants, those that incorporate multiple chiller sizes, types or fuel streams. Such plants offer more reliability compared to conventional chiller plant designs but, being dependent exclusively on electricity, it is vulnerable to power shortages. While such systems provide flexibility to operators, they also demand greater diligence.

Controlling lighting costs, not occupants

Article Abstract:

A study conducted on the benefits of lighting controls equipped with occupancy sensors reported a minimum of 25% savings in power utilization. The study was conducted by Affiliated Engineers Inc of Madison WI, for such clients as the National Institute of Health and Emeryville, CA-based Chiron Corp. However, despite the availability of evidence to the contrary, most building owners perceive such lighting controls to be costly add-ons that have little value to their occupants.
