NASA's big push for the space station

Article Abstract:

Three core modules of the International Space Station are in orbit, and NASA is preparing three missions using its space shuttle, to accomplish three critical missions that will be accomplished at the same time as the first permant crew is sent to the station. Various problems still need to be overcome, including poser problems, the possibility of electric shock danger to space-walking astronauts, unexpected degradation of fiber-optic communication lines and late, error-filled control software. With no time for further delays, 'workarounds' are being devised for some of these difficulties.

Titan calling

Article Abstract:

Most dramatic chapter in the mission's history will happen when scientists attempt to peek beneath the atmospheric veil that surrounds Saturn's largest moon, Titan-a chapter that might have ended in disaster, save for one persistent engineer. In collaboration of European Space Agency, Cassini designed to scan Saturn and its moon, carries hitchhiker-a lander probe called Huygens built for a single purpose to pierce the cloaking methane atmosphere of Titan and report its findings back to cassini for relay to Earth.

Russia's space program: running on empty

Article Abstract:

Russia urgently needs an inflow of funds to maintain its space activities in the 1990s. Although the country still launches space boosters, this may be discontinued since the military stockpiles of boosters have been depleted. Meanwhile, it has accepted visiting astronauts for a fee in their manned space flights. To date, restructuring has resulted in three entities supervising the country's space program: the Russian Space Agency, the Military Space Forces and Energiya Rocket and Space Complex.
