Circular motor gives a lift to building designs

Article Abstract:

Kone of Finland has developed the EcoDisc, a linear motor in circular form that is much smaller than conventional devices. The highly efficient unit has fewer energy requirements than traditional hoisting units and requires no oil. Advantages of the new technology include avoidable power losses from a gearbox or pump, and using the motor as part of the counter weight. The unit's small size means that machine rooms can be smaller.

Innovation cuts cost of rodless cylinders: careful design and analysis has broadened the application base of rodless cylinders

Article Abstract:

A new rodless cylinder, developed using finite element analysis, is compact and has an optimum operating envelope, and will offer many applications to designers. It provides all the benefits of a pneumatic cylinder, with steeper angles, enabling a shorter yoke assembly length. Axially mounted connectors are incorporated as a further space saving characteristic.

Analysis has its head in the clouds

Article Abstract:

The automotive industry is a key user of technology allowing designers to use point cloud data to check prototype products against original CAD information without consulting 2D paper dimension drawings. This technology will be most beneficial to manufacturers of high-volume, precision parts.
