Cleaning up

Article Abstract:

James Dyson, inventor of the bagless vacuum cleaner, believes that venture capitalists should receive tax incentives to encourage them to support start-up technology companies. He would also like to see tax breaks for research and development, and more incentives for engineering students. Dyson is famously trying to reduce country by country patent renewal and is taking his case to the European Court of Human Rights on the grounds that patent renewal charges contravene Article 10 on Human Rights.

Plastic-on-silicon sniffs out chemicals

Article Abstract:

Farfield Sensors has developed a sensor chip containing plastic-on-silicon optical waveguides able to detect and measure organic solvents, humidity and gaseous pollutants. The upper layer of the sensor is made of poly 4 vinyl pyridine or polymethyl methacrylate on which are laid dioxide and oxynitride. The polymer is then bonded to a 10mm square chip.
