Northern Ireland offers commercial opportunities and Sainsbury's and Tesco have already announced their intentions to operate there. There has been extensive media coverage of the newcomers focusing on increased competition and sponsorship. However the planning implications of the proposals give rise to contravention of planning policies as determined in the Belfast Urban Area Plan and the Northern Ireland Rural Planning Strategy. Public inquiries will deal with the major applications.
